REQUIREMENT PROFILE
for Solvents to be Used in
Automatic Blanket Cleaners
A material compatibility test must be carried out for the use
of your solvent in the BALDWIN Automatic Blanket Cleaners "R300
/ R400" (web offset press), "Z300 / Z400" (newspaper
press) and "B300" (sheet-fed offset press).
The solvent test may either be initiated through FOGRA or through
BALDWIN.
As a rule, two orders have to be made out for the solvent test:
1. One to FOGRA for the determination that the solvent is environmentally
neutral and the basic test of the material compatibility with
automatic blanket cleaners by Messrs. BALDWIN.
Costs :
€ 1,600.00 for FOGRA non-members
€ 1,200.00 for FOGRA members
2. One to BALDWIN for the issue of the works certificate and the
connected initial conditions
Costs : € 1,275.00
We require for the test:
· 2 litres of solvent in a glass or sheet metal container
· EG Safety Data Sheet
· Flash point of the solvent above 55° Celsius (regulation
by the "BG" [Trade Association])
· Certificate that:
¨ Benzene content << 0.1 %
¨ Toluene content < 1.0 %
¨ Aromatics content < 1.0 %
¨ the following substances are not contained in the solvent:
- Halogenated hydrocarbons
- Terpenes
- n-hexane
- Secondary amines and amides
- Constituents whose use is associated with non-acceptable health
risks as per the current state of knowledge of occupational medicine
and toxicology
· Statement that the formulation will not be changed after
the solvent has been released
· Certificate that the solvent is corrosion-inhibited

· Certificate by the PTB
When the solvent is intended for a use on web offset presses with
heat-set dryer, an additional examination of the solvent must
be made by the "Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt"
in Braunschweig (PTB; Physical-Technical Federal Agency). In a
test, the data of the lower explosion limit (LEL at 20° Celsius
and 1013 mbar) and the response factor (mass-specific conversion
factor) for the measuring instruments calibrated to propane are
determined.
Please send one copy of this expertise by the PTB-Braunschweig
to FOGRA and one to BALDWIN.
Please submit the request for this test directly to:
Physikalische-Technische Bundesanstalt
z.Hd. Frau Dr. Brandes
- Laborleiterin -
Bundesallee 100
D - 38116 Braunschweig
All costs for the test will be settled directly with the PTB.
We expressly point out that in the case of damage (explosion in
the dryer), the PTB will examine the solvent. It will then be
determined whether the formulation is identical with the tested
solvent.
When these requirements are met, testing of the solvent can be
carried out.
However, BALDWIN expressly point out that this material compatibility
test does not make any statement concerning the wash quality on
the press and that we will not acknowledge any liability claims
or claims for damages with reference to solvents that cause damage
to plates, blankets or other press components.
The quality of the wash results can only be checked and assessed
on the press.
For the test on the press at the customer's we will charge the
costs as accrued as per our current assembly rates plus travel
expenses.
Finally, we would like to point out that no solvent manufacturer
is authorised to use our company name for labels of solvents.
